SPAN 315: Intro Translation Span/Eng
Students perform introductory translation assignments from Spanish to English and vice versa. They develop an understanding of translation theory through reading and class discussion and come to understand communicative translation and compare it to a direct, word-for-word approach. Problematic grammatical, discursive, and pragmatic issues are analyzed and the grammar of Spanish is reviewed in detail.
This course was completed on Spring 2014 and it meets the first and second MLO. This course contributes to the fulfillment of the MLO by helping me better understand how translating works between English and Spanish articles/books. Some work that I compleated in this learning experience/course that illustrates my development in this area are two homework assignments that we turned in, a midterm, and a final project. One of the homeworks was to translate a story from Spanish to English, and the other homework was to translate an old newspaper article from English to Spanish. The midterm consisted of 31 questions involving the history and methods of translating and a short paragraph written in English that we had to translate to Spanish. The final project was to choose a book written in English, translated 4,000 words (around two chapters) to Spanish (or vice versa) and give a mini-presentation on it. Some understandings that I gained from this course that is a significant contribution for my major is that sometimes one cannot literally translate everything that is in one language to the other. Some areas that I wish to develop further are to expand my vocabulary in Spanish since I am more fluent in English than in Spanish. I intend to further explore this learning experience by reading more article/books that are translated in English and Spanish to see the differences that they contain based on the translation.
