SPAN 302: Hist/Phonetic Struct Span Lang
Surveys the development of modern Castillian and Latin American Spanish, its evolution as a Romance language, the Roman period, Visigoth and Arab influences, Native American contributions, and its modern language diversity. Describes the phonology and morphology of modern Spanish. Recommended for students interested in teaching Spanish. (Offered as interest warrants.)
This course was completed on Spring 2015 and it meets the first and second MLO’s. This course contributes to the fulfillment of the MLO by helping me better understand the history behind the Spanish language and how it has evolved throughout time and how it varies in different locations around the world. Some work that I completed in this learning experience/course that illustrates my development in this area are eight homeworks, a presentation/review, another presentation and a final. Instead of having tests, the teacher would give us homework that would involve the material that we had gone over in class (powerpoints, articles, etc.). Towards the end of the semester, in groups of two to four, we had to brainstorm and make a web using a list of terms related to what we had learned in class. Afterwards, we presented in class and got extra credit. There is also another presentation that we had to do which involved the Spanish of a region. My group decided to do the presentation on Peru, in which includes its historical factors, linguistic and historical influences, morphology characteristics, syntax characteristics, and its lexicon. Some understandings that I gained from this course that is a significant contribution for my major is that I got a better understanding of where the Spanish language originates from and how not all Spanish is the same. Some areas that I wish to develop further are to see if the English language has the same situation as the Spanish language (Where did it originate?,Does it vary depending where it is spoken?, etc.) and are there any studies based on it. I intend to further explore this learning experience by finding and reading studies related to Mexican-American Spanish and Mexican Spanish and seeing their similarities and differences.
