SPAN 301S: Service Learning in Latino Community
Students enhance Spanish language communication skills via community service in local community agencies. (Offered fall semester). (Credit/No Credit Available)
This course was completed on Fall 2013 and it meets the graduation requirement and the first MLO. This course contributes to the fulfillment of the MLO by giving me a better understanding of the Spanish culture and language. Some work that I completed in this learning experience/course that illustrates my development in this area is a journal. The class consisted of mostly working in groups and by working, which is to share our experiences about our service learning and/or talking about the topics discussed in class. We had to keep a journal about our experiences for our service learning. We also had to turn in an evaluation done by the supervisor at the site, a learning agreement, and an activity and time log. Some understandings that I gained from this course that is a significant contribution for my major is interacting with people that are fluent in Spanish and helping them with their English (spelling, writing, pronunciation, etc.). It also taught me new skills, new self-awareness and other things. Some areas that I wish to develop further are my language skills in both English and Spanish since I sometimes had to translate some sentences and/or individual words. I intend to further explore this learning experience by hopefully going back to where I did my service learning to help them out since they are understaffed and they need all the help they can get.
