MLO 3: Literary and Cultural Knowledge
The student develops a reasonable understanding of the ways of thinking (ideas, beliefs, attitudes, values, philosophies), the behavioral practices (patterns of social interactions) and the cultural products – both tangible and intangible (for example, art, history, literature, music) — of Hispanic cultures.
● The student completes between two and six courses (depending on his or her choice of emphasis, as either in language and linguistics knowledge or literary and cultural knowledge) in Hispanic literature, culture or society. General areas to choose from are: literature, the social sciences (anthropology, geography, history, political systems), art history, music history, religion or other non-Spanish courses specific to Hispanic culture or society.
The courses that were completed for this MLO are SPAN 306 and SPAN 304. Meeting the outcomes of this MLO are supported by the courses that I have completed. For SPAN 306, it was about the history of Latin America; from its pre-Columbian origins to the present. As for SPAN 304, it was about hispanic literature in the forms of fiction, drama, essay, and poetry from Spain and Spanish America. Some areas within the MLO that I have developed are knowing more about the overall history of Latin America and the literature of Spain and Mexico. I have always wanted to know about the history of Mexico and in the class that I took with Rafael Gomez, I was able to learn just that (including the history of other counties as well). As for the area of literature, I found many interesting stories like,"Chac Mool" by Carlos Fuentes and "Las medias rojas" by
Emilia Pardo Bazán, and I was able to analyze them. As for the area that I wish to continue to develop after completing my degree would in the area of literature. I would like to read more stories/poetry that originate from Mexico, since I have mostly read stories/poems from American and British authors. An area of the MLO that I found challenging was trying to analyze poems. I dealt with this challenge by reading the textbook to get a better understand on how to analyze them. If I could still not understand it, I would ask someone for help. This MLO contributed to my personal intellectual growth by helping me improve my knowledge on the history of Latin America and hispanic literature. Because of this, I now understand the events that happen in Mexico during a certain timeframes and I have a good aspect on how hispanic literature works.
