GS 362: Global Literatures
Examines intercultural communications through a global/historical lens that encompasses encounters in colonial, post-colonial, and global contexts. A series of novels, essays, and short stories from the postcolonial world are read in which the authors project their sense of individual and collective identities formed through the colonial interface and its aftermath. Examines relationships between author/audience and student/text in a cross-cultural dialog. (Offered every semester.)
This course was completed on Spring 2014 and it meets the GWAR requirement for my ILP. This course contributes to the fulfillment of the ILP by helping me get a new view of other cultures around the world thru literary works/articles related to them. Some work that I compleated in this learning experience/course that illustrates my development in this area are essays, a presentation, a midterm and a couple of quizzes. Three of the four essays that were assigned were analysis based on books that we had read in class (After the Bombs, Old Madam Yin, and Things Fall Apart). The other essay was sort of an autobiography in which I describe three important places in Monterey that I found important in my life. As for the presentation, we had to find a couple of symbolisms in the book “After the Bombs,” by Arturo Arias, and explain what it meant. Lastly, the quizzes were based on the articles that the teacher would give us to read as homework. Some understandings that I gained from this course that is a significant contribution for my major is that it gave me a different insight to other cultures. Some areas that I wish to develop further are to be able to find symbolism more easily in literature. Also, to better analyze articles since it is kind of a weakness for me. I intend to further explore this learning experience by reading other material related to the countries that were mentioned in class.
