MLO 2: Language and Linguistics Knowledge
The student develops an understanding of the structure of the Spanish language and is able to use an appropriate level of formality according to the situation, whether in writing or in speech.
● The student completes between two and six courses (depending on his or her choice of emphasis, as either language and linguistics knowledge or literary and cultural knowledge) related to the Spanish language and linguistics. These courses deal with: the sound system of Spanish, the history of Spanish, advanced grammar, Spanish-English translation, a general introduction to Spanish linguistics, Spanish for professional application (medical, legal, etc. spheres), composition and conversation.
The courses that were completed for this MLO are LING 392, SPAN 301, SPAN 313, SPAN 315, SPAN 302, and SPAN 303. Meeting the outcomes of this MLO are supported by the courses that I have completed. The first one was SPAN 301, which was mostly about the gramatical rules in the Spanish language. As for SPAN 313, it was about Spanish Linguistics and it also mentioned a bit of the history of how Spanish came to be. In SPAN 315, it was about translating English to Spanish and vise versa. In LING 392, the class was about linguistics but this time in English. Some of the material that was taught was review for me since I had already taken SPAN 313. As for SPAN 302, it is about the history of the Spanish language and the different kinds that exist around the world. Lastly, there is SPAN 303, which is almost the same as SPAN 301, but this time it is more advance. Some areas within the MLO that I have developed are knowing more about the grammar and linguistics of the Spanish language. As for the areas that I wish to continue to develop after completing my degree would in the area of linguistics. I find it interesting on how the Spanish Language (and others, like English) is structured (e.g. Phrase Structure Tree), where languages from other regions originate from, the difference between a language that is spoken in different areas of the world, etc. Some areas of the MLO that I found challenging were in the area of the Spanish grammar. I dealt with this challenge in many ways. One way was to read the assigned textbook to better understand the rules. I would also look at the examples provided in the textbook, which were even more helpful. This MLO contributed to my personal intellectual growth by helping me improve my knowledge in Spanish grammar and in linguistics. With this in mind, I was able to develop an interest in linguistics and I think it will help me better understand the structures of other languages that I plan to learn after I manage to become fluent in English and Spanish.
